Should you rent or buy a Bay Area piano?
The answer obviously depends on circumstances, such as your budget, your degree of proficiency, and what you want to use the piano for. At our piano store, we encourage clients to invest in their musical futures. But sometimes it makes more sense to rent than to buy.
1. You need a piano on a project basis.
Perhaps you’re setting up a musical theater camp, and you need an instrument to accompany students to South Pacific or How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Or maybe you’re helping a friend out with an album. A piano rental might make more sense than a purchase.
2. You’re not ready to commit to the piano as your instrument of choice.
Maybe your 10-year-old daughter has gotten really excited about the piano, but you remember her experience with clarinet. She loved it at first but then grew “bored.” You don’t want to repeat that experience with a pricier instrument. A rental is a great way to allow a new student to “dip a toe in” without committing.
3. You want to explore, in-depth, a number of different instruments.
It’s a sound strategy: test drive before you commit to buying. Please also consider stopping into the showroom here at Pianos Plus to compare and contrast different instruments.
4. You don’t have the money to buy a piano.
When you rent an instrument, you may not earn equity, but you can immediately start playing and practicing. You can also find rent to buy options available.
5. You’re moving soon.
If you’re not sure whether you will stay in the Bay Area for years, you might rent to avoid the hassle of trying to resell an old piano or move the piano across the country.
