Four New Yamaha Keyboard Apps = Music to Musicians’ EarsFour New Yamaha Keyboard Apps = Music to Musicians’ Ears

Technology. What can’t it do? For Yamaha, the answer apparently is: nothing.

Consider the latest Yamaha tech roll out: four amazing new apps for the iPhone or iPad to help musicians extract more beauty and resonance out of their instruments. Here they are:

1. NoteStar

Ever wanted to jam out with your favorite band? If so, this iPad app will deliver the goods in the form of easy to read sheet music that flows smoothly (no need to stop and scroll while you’re inthe middle of a song) – backed by real vocals and bands. You can get the download free at the App Store and purchase any song for just $3.99.

2. Page Turner

Here’s another digital sheet music app for the iPad. You can wirelessly turn the pages of your music, if you own a Yamaha EZ-220 keyboard. The app is amazing – it’s essentially a mind reader. It knows when you need to turn the page. You don’t need any extra accessories or setup. Just download the app at the App Store, launch it, and start playing. The app also has an audio recorder so you can get instant feedback. It’s due out at end of May.

3. Song Chords

This app for the iPhone (available in February 2012) is also a dynamo. It features a built-in chord dictionary, chord charts, music store, and lead sheet. You can practice, supplement a live performance, or use the chords to vamp for a missing band member.

4. Scale Tuner

Scale Tuner lets you tune your digital piano or Yamaha keyboard and more. Preset scales include pure temperament, Arabic, etc. The Scale Tuner is compatible with lots of Yamaha models, including CVP501, 503, 505, 509 and CGP1000.

The Yamaha Silent Piano {Video}

Silent piano. The shift of a lever keeps hammers from striking the strings, while a small control unit activates digital piano tones.

Many Yamaha piano models are also available in versatile digital/acoustic versions. Pioneered by Yamaha, these innovative hybrids offer the uncompromising enjoyment of an acoustic grand with a wide range of digital music capabilities.

The silent piano from Yamaha gives you the ability to not only play a beautiful acoustic piano but gives you the benefits of a digital piano as well.  With just a few seconds you can go from playing acoustic piano to slipping on your head phones and play digitally while maintaining the feel of acoustic pianos keys.   You can even change sounds, record & play back, hook up a USB thumb drive, and/or connect to your computer.

The Yamaha Clavinova CLP 400 Series

The Yamaha Clavinova CLP 400 Series:For “Piano Purists” (Who Still Want Those Fun Digital Features!)

The Yamaha Clavinova Piano CLP 400 Series

Yamaha’s Clavinova CLP 400 series digital pianos meets two distinct needs. On the one hand, the pianos are outfitted with very cool, cutting-edge enhanced digital technologies. On the otherhand, they provide clean, elegant piano design and craftsmanship.
The line between the traditional upright and the digital keyboard is blurring faster than ever.  A few years ago, a digital piano was obviously a digital piano and classical upright was obviously a classical upright. But pianos like Yamaha’s Clavinova CLP 400 models are hybrids, through and through. For instance, consider the panel reveal key cover, which “discreetly hides all panel buttons, removing any visible sign of technology, giving the console models a more classic, acoustic upright look.”

Yamaha itself admits it’s aiming for a classical design and appearance in its digital pianos. The manager of the company’s electronic keyboard marketing, Dane Madsen, had this to say: “in addition to its technological enhancements, [the new CLP line] has raised the bar as to just how close the digital piano can look like an acoustic piano.”

Here are some of the cool “bells and whistles” (so to speak) that distinguish the 400 models from earlier digital pianos, such the classic 1983 Clavinova (seems like eons ago, doesn’t it?):

  • USB audio recorder to capture and document performances and piano lessons.
  • Intelligent acoustic control function to change EQ tone control.
  • 88 levels of gradations from top to bottom (CLP 470 and 480 models) through a feature called graded linear hammer – that’s a lot of subtlety and a lot of “pianoforte” – a close approximation of the dynamic capacity that true acoustic pianos can deliver.
  • Weighted pianos style keys.

If you are in the market for a Clavinova CLP 400 series piano, talk to the Bay Area’s most respected authorized Yamaha piano dealer, Pianos Plus. Yamaha’s Disklavier Pianos the “Player Pianos”

Disklavier Yamaha Piano Yamaha Disklavier Pianos

Yamaha’s Disklavier Pianos recall the so-called “player pianos” made famous in depictions of the Old West – pianos, that, by some dint of sorcery, could “play themselves.” In actuality, the old-school player pianos used sophisticated (for the time) mechanics to read special sheet music and make it look like a master concert piano was at the bench.

Yamaha’s Disklavier pianos are in an entirely different league.  The New York Times dubbed the Disklavier Mark IV as “the first piano in the world with an internet connection.” Disklaviers are hybrids: they are functioning pianos, but they are also something “more” — something digital.

The NYT’s 2008 article, “A Grand (i.e., Cool) Piano,” summed up these instruments nicely: “maybe you’ve seen player pianos in a hotel lobby or a shopping mall, playing holiday tunes all by themselves, keys and pedals madly going up and down. This is not an audio recording…the hammer strike real strings, making loud acoustic music. It’s a recreation of a real pianist’s performance, faithful to the tiniest grace note.” Continue reading
